Team Nautilus, a crew of five, Aoife Luscombe, Becky Robb, Matt, Grace Church and Kenza, completed an unsupported circumnavigation of Great Britain in 38 days, 3 hours, 41 minutes and 25 seconds, setting a new Guinness World Record. PEAK4 served as their official wellbeing partner throughout, providing WHOOP wearable devices to each crew member, delivering individualised weekly performance reports covering sleep, recovery, strain and nutrition, and providing a pre-expedition nutrition masterclass and post-expedition recovery session. Individual daily calorie expenditure ranged from 2,092 to 3,557 kcal across the crew during the expedition, with one crew member expending 5,375 kcal in a single day. Within 25 days of returning to dry land, sleep duration, recovery score and HRV had all returned to or surpassed pre-expedition baselines.

When Aoife, Becky, Matt, Grace, and Kenza came together to enter the GB Row Challenge, they did not set out to break a world record. They set out to finish. In the end, they did both, completing an unsupported, roughly 2,000-mile circumnavigation of Great Britain through challenging and unpredictable waters in 38 days, 3 hours, 41 minutes and 25 seconds, a new Guinness World Record.

The Crew

Team Nautilus are business professionals with regular day jobs, like any of us. In fact, half the five-person crew had never rowed competitively before signing up. So what does it take for five people to live and row through six weeks of rough water, in a cramped boat, on almost no sleep?

  • 12 months of preparation
  • A resilient mindset
  • A strong support system
  • Great teammates
  • And a good playlist

Life at Sea

For ten days straight, the crew rowed in two-hour shifts around the clock without ever having dry feet, and with so little daylight that even their equipment could not recharge. Rest breaks meant hand-pumping drinking water rather than resting. Ten-metre waves regularly threw them from their seats, and every changeover meant peeling on cold, wet kit all over again.

In between the exhaustion came humpback and minke whales, dolphins riding the bow wave, seals and puffins beyond counting, and stretches of British coastline that felt completely undiscovered. Moments that turned five colleagues into a team bonded for life, and reminded them, hour by hour, exactly what they were capable of.

PEAK4 and Team Nautilus

PEAK4 was honoured to be part of Nautilus's support system, helping every crew member perform at their best through the same performance science approaches used in elite sport.

"We love working with people and projects that push the boundaries of human performance, and Team Nautilus was one of the most extreme environments we have ever supported. We knew that customised, detailed weekly insight covering sleep, nutrition, exercise, recovery and HRV could genuinely help each crew member perform at their best. We also knew that our experts would be able to support them through this journey and keep them safer throughout the expedition. Seeing the team go on to break a world record was an incredible achievement and a testament to what people can accomplish when they have the right support, insight and belief in what they are capable of. We are incredibly proud to have played a part in helping Team Nautilus realise that potential." Emma Johnson, Director and Co-Founder of PEAK4

Turning Data Into Decisions

Each crew member wore a WHOOP device, tracking ten key health and performance metrics across workload, recovery and sleep. PEAK4 transformed this data into weekly newsletters, individualised reports, a pre-expedition nutrition masterclass and a post-expedition recovery and sleep session, turning complex data into practical guidance the crew could apply throughout the demands of a punishing 2-hours-on, 2-hours-off rowing schedule.

The results were stark. Individual responses varied enormously: one crew member expended more than 5,375 kcal in a single day, while another expended just 2,100 kcal over the same 24-hour period, a difference of more than 3,000 kcal. For PEAK4, this reinforced the importance of an individualised approach, using each crew member's data to tailor feedback and guidance to their specific needs rather than applying a single averaged target across the crew.

Recovery told an equally powerful story. Within 25 days of returning to dry land, sleep duration, recovery score and HRV had all returned to, or surpassed, pre-expedition baselines, demonstrating the value of structured monitoring in supporting recovery well beyond the finish line.

Fuelling the Effort

"When you are burning nearly 3,000 calories a day and sleeping in fragments, refuelling is not optional: it is the difference between recovery and breakdown. Getting the balance right between exercise, calories burned and intake was what allowed the crew to keep performing under such tough conditions." Tom Whitehead, Head Performance Nutritionist, PEAK4

The Crew's Perspective

Aoife Luscombe brought the five-person crew together long before a single oar hit the water, and led the team through months of planning and preparation:

"My priority from day one was not finding five good rowers: it was finding five people who would have each other's backs when things got hard. We built this team on respect, kindness and good times, and that is exactly what got us through the toughest days at sea."

Crew member Becky Robb reflects on what the data meant in practice:

"I am used to relying on data to make good decisions, but nothing prepares you for using it to manage your own body at sea. Having PEAK4's accurate and individualised data gave us real confidence. It was not guesswork: it was evidence we could act on in real time, and that precision mattered when the margins were so small."

Why This Matters Beyond the Water

This is the first time PEAK4 has supported a physical challenge of this scale, and it demonstrates something increasingly relevant to workplace performance and wellbeing programmes: precise, personalised data, not averages or assumptions, alongside expert support and guidance is what allows people to perform sustainably under pressure.

From extreme endurance athletes to high-performing teams in corporate environments, the same principles apply:

  • Establish a baseline
  • Monitor the data to drive clear actions
  • Provide tailored expert support

For PEAK4, Team Nautilus represented a unique opportunity to apply performance science in the real world, combining data, expertise and human support to understand, guide and optimise performance in one of the most demanding environments imaginable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did Team Nautilus break a Guinness World Record?

Team Nautilus, Aoife Luscombe, Becky Robb, Matt, Grace Church and Kenza, completed an unsupported circumnavigation of Great Britain by rowing boat in 38 days, 3 hours, 41 minutes and 25 seconds, breaking the previous Guinness World Record for a mixed crew. The crew rowed in two-hour shifts around the clock for the duration of the challenge, supported by PEAK4 as their official wellbeing partner.

What is the GB Row Challenge?

The GB Row Challenge is an unsupported ocean rowing race circumnavigating Great Britain, covering approximately 2,000 miles. Teams depart from and return to Tower Bridge in London, rowing around the full coastline of mainland Great Britain. It is considered one of the most demanding team endurance events in the world, with fewer than 40 completions on record.

How did PEAK4 support Team Nautilus?

PEAK4 served as Team Nautilus's official wellbeing partner throughout the GB Row Challenge. PEAK4 provided WHOOP wearable devices to every crew member, tracked ten key physiological metrics across workload, recovery and sleep throughout the expedition, and delivered weekly crew-wide and individualised performance reports. PEAK4 also provided a pre-expedition nutrition and hydration masterclass and a post-expedition recovery and sleep session.

Why does individualised data matter in endurance performance?

During the GB Row Challenge, individual daily calorie expenditure across the Team Nautilus crew ranged from 2,092 to 3,557 kcal per day on average, with one crew member expending 5,375 kcal in a single day. A single averaged crew target would have led some crew members to significantly under-fuel and others to over-fuel. Individualised data allows support and guidance to be tailored to each person's actual physiological response rather than a population average.

How quickly did Team Nautilus recover after the GB Row Challenge?

PEAK4 continued monitoring Team Nautilus via WHOOP devices for three weeks after the expedition. Within 25 days of returning to dry land, sleep duration, recovery score and HRV had all returned to or surpassed pre-expedition baselines. HRV improved by 20.4% post-expedition compared with the pre-expedition baseline, and resting heart rate reached its lowest recorded value across the entire 10-week monitoring period in week three of recovery.

Can PEAK4 support workplace wellbeing programmes as well as endurance athletes?

Yes. The same principles that underpinned PEAK4's support for Team Nautilus, establishing a baseline, monitoring data to drive clear actions, and providing tailored expert support, apply directly to corporate wellbeing and performance programmes. PEAK4 supports a wide range of performance environments, from endurance expeditions to workplace teams. Contact hello@peak4.co.uk to find out more.
