PEAK4 x Team Nautilus: Week Six - The Return to High Output
The Return to High Output
After a slight easing in Week Five, Team Nautilus have pushed back into high-output territory. Strain is up. Rowing activity is up. Energy demands are climbing again. Six weeks into a 2,000-mile row around Great Britain, the crew are demonstrating something remarkable - the ability to return to near-peak output after sustained weeks of ultra-endurance work.
At this stage of the expedition, that is not a given. It is a result of disciplined fuelling, consistent recovery habits and the kind of mental resilience that only comes from choosing to get back in the boat, shift after shift, week after week.
This is Week Six.
A Note on This Week's Data
Sleep and recovery metrics remain unavailable due to limitations in data collection while at sea. One crew member had no workload data available this week. This report focuses on workload, strain and energy expenditure across the remaining crew members.
Week Six Key Findings (July 7th – July 13th)
Strain
Average daily strain increased to 16.8 - up 12% on Week Five - indicating a clear return towards higher workload levels. Several crew members recorded daily strain scores above 20, putting them back in the WHOOP "All Out" category for sustained periods throughout the week.
Energy Expenditure
Average calories burned rose to 2,767 kcal per day - up 3.9% - with individual expenditure ranging from 1,756 to 4,071 kcal per day. The spread across the crew continues to widen as individual workload patterns diverge. One crew member is burning more than twice the daily calories of another - a reminder that this is six individual physiological stories playing out simultaneously on the same boat.
Workout Volume
Average recorded workouts increased to 23.5 per week - up 16.3% - confirming the uptick in rowing activity across the crew. One individual recorded 42 sessions across the week - a 223% increase on the previous period - reflecting a substantially busier stretch of the expedition.
What the Data Tells Us: Sustaining Performance Over Time
Six weeks into a continuous ultra-endurance expedition, the performance challenge has fundamentally changed. In the early weeks, the question was how the body responds to extreme load. Now, the question is how the body sustains performance when that load has never stopped.
Repeated daily rowing exposure, sustained high strain and continuous energy demand create a compounding physiological cost. Unlike a single race or event, there is no finish line on the horizon that allows the body to fully commit everything it has left. The crew must manage their output carefully - maintaining high performance without crossing into a state of accumulated fatigue they cannot recover from before the next shift begins.
This is where fuelling strategy becomes the primary performance tool. At this stage of the expedition, the crew cannot train harder. They can only fuel smarter. The individuals showing the most consistent output week on week are those who have maintained disciplined nutrition across every rotation - not just around the harder rowing blocks, but consistently, across the full 24-hour cycle.
Individual Highlights
- Highest energy output: One crew member maintained 4,071 kcal/day for the second consecutive week - alongside 39 recorded workouts and a daily strain of 20.7. Six weeks in and this individual is still operating at the absolute upper limit of the WHOOP scale.
- Biggest workload increase: One crew member recorded 42 workouts - up 223% - with energy expenditure rising to 3,516 kcal/day (+17.4%) and strain jumping to 20.6 (+36.4%). A significantly harder week, requiring a substantial increase in fuelling to match.
- Returning from reduced load: One crew member saw strain rise sharply to 20.1 (+40.6%) following a lower-output Week Five - demonstrating the fluctuating but demanding nature of the rota across a long expedition.
- Continued reduced workload: Two crew members recorded lower strain and calorie figures this week. Maintaining nutrition discipline during lower-output periods - eating consistently even when the physical demand is reduced - is critical for staying ready when the workload returns.
Week Six Focus: Sustainable Output for the Final Stages
With the expedition moving into its later stages, our performance team's focus is on sustaining performance consistently rather than chasing short-term peaks:
- Consistency above all else. Fuelling and hydration discipline across every shift rotation - not just the hard ones - is what separates crews that finish strong from those that fade.
- Match intake to individual output. With daily calorie demands ranging from under 1,800 to over 4,000 kcal across the crew, individual fuelling targets matter. There is no one-size-fits-all number at this stage.
- Adjust carbohydrate intake to intensity. Higher-intensity shifts require more carbohydrate availability. Lighter periods are an opportunity to top up stores - not to reduce intake.
- Hydration and electrolytes remain non-negotiable regardless of workload level or sea conditions.
- Focus on the next shift, not the finish line. At this stage of an ultra-endurance expedition, the most effective mindset is a short one - prepare well, execute the shift, recover, repeat.
