PEAK4 x Team Nautilus: Week One - Baseline, Departure and the Data Behind the Challenge
The Row Begins
On Sunday 14th June 2026, Team Nautilus departed Tower Bridge to begin one of the most demanding endurance challenges in the world - a 2,000-mile row around Great Britain. Less than 30 people have ever completed it.
PEAK4 is proud to be supporting the crew as their official wellbeing partner. Our team has fitted every member with a WHOOP wearable device, giving us real-time data on recovery, sleep, heart rate variability, resting heart rate and daily strain. Each week, we publish the findings here.
This is Week One.
What We're Tracking - and Why It Matters
The Nautilus crew operate on a brutal rota: two hours rowing, two hours off, around the clock. There are no full nights of sleep. No recovery days. No breaks from the sea.
To understand how the human body responds to that kind of sustained load, we track ten key metrics every week:
- Sleep performance - how well the body is using its available rest
- Sleep duration - total hours of sleep accumulated across 24 hours
- Sleep consistency - regularity of sleep timing
- Sleep efficiency - proportion of time in bed actually spent sleeping
- Daily strain - total cardiovascular load on a scale of 0–21
- Workout volume - number of recorded activity sessions
- Calories burned - total daily energy expenditure
- Recovery score - readiness to perform, scored 0–100%
- Heart rate variability (HRV) - a key marker of nervous system recovery
- Resting heart rate (RHR) - baseline cardiovascular load
Together, these metrics give us a detailed picture of how the crew are coping - and where the risk points are building.
Week One Key Findings (June 3rd – June 9th)
This first report covers the final week before departure - a period of pre-expedition preparation - plus the first two days at sea following the Sunday afternoon launch from Tower Bridge.
Strain and Workload
Average daily strain jumped to 13.2 - a 91.3% increase on the previous week. The crew completed an average of 16.5 workouts, up 312.5%, and burned approximately 2,311 kcal per day - a 31% increase. These numbers reflect the physical intensity of final preparations and the immediate shock of beginning the rowing rota.
Sleep
Average sleep performance dropped to 74% (down 6.7%), with duration falling to 6.6 hours (down 7%) and consistency to 67% (down 3.9%). The 2-hours-on/2-hours-off structure was already fragmenting rest patterns.
Despite this, sleep efficiency held at 94% - just 0.5% below the previous week. When the crew did sleep, the quality remained high. The body was adapting quickly.
Recovery
Average recovery score fell to 51% (down 5.9%), with HRV dropping to 57ms (down 7.9%) and resting heart rate rising to 58bpm (up 3.8%). Five of the six crew members showed reductions in HRV or increases in RHR - the physiological signature of a body under rising demand.
What the Data Tells Us
The transition from land-based preparation into continuous expedition rowing is a significant physiological event. The sharp increases in strain, activity volume and calorie burn are expected - but seeing them reflected clearly in the data confirms the crew are already working at a level most athletes never approach.
The encouraging sign is sleep efficiency. Despite the fragmented rota, the crew are making strong use of every rest window available. That ability to drop into quality sleep quickly - rather than lying awake - is a genuine performance advantage over the weeks ahead.
Recovery markers are declining as expected. The body is not yet adapted to this workload. That is normal. What matters is how the crew manage nutrition, hydration and sleep discipline over the coming weeks to prevent those markers from dropping further.
Week One Focus: Energy Balance, Hydration and Sleep Maximisation
Based on the Week One data, our performance team has set the following crew-wide priorities:
- Nutrition: Match energy intake to expenditure across each 24-hour period. Target approximately 50% of calories from carbohydrates, 30% from fats and 20% from protein. Prioritise carbohydrate intake before and after every rowing shift.
- Hydration: Aim for 30–40ml per kg bodyweight per day as a baseline, adjusted for conditions. Monitor urine colour and increase electrolyte intake during hotter conditions or heavy sweating periods.
- Sleep: Maximise every available rest window within the rota. Accumulate as close to 8 hours of total sleep per 24-hour period as conditions allow.
